Egypt won a record seventh African Cup of Nations title, their third in a row, after a late goal from Mohamed Nagy Gedo gave them a 1-0 win over Ghana at Estadio 11 Novembro in Luanda, Angola.
Mohamed Nagy scored the only goal of the game as Egypt secured a third consecutive African Cup of Nations title.
Tournament debutant Nagy, nicknamed Geddo, curled in a shot in the 85th minute inside the area to give Egypt its record seventh title.
There were few chances at the start of the game, apart from an early corner from Kwadwo Asamoah catching out goalkeeper Essam El-Hadary, while Egypt's first half-chance came via a wayward strike over the top from captain Ahmed Hassan.
Andre Ayew then failed to punish the Pharaohs when Gomaa mistakenly headed into his path, but his shot was dragged wide.
Although Egypt were enjoying more possession, it was Ghana who were creating the better goalscoring chances, as Asamoah illustrated when his well-struck 20-yard strike forced El-Hadary into a tricky low catch. Then Gyan came close for his side after 51 minutes with a zipping 25-yard free-kick that flew inches over, followed by Ayew firing wide from the edge of the box.
Egypt coach Shehata had seen enough, sending on Mohamed Abdel-Shafy and then the tournament's leading marksman, Geddo, with 20 minutes remaining. The decisive moment of the game came from Geddo, cutting into the box from the left, playing a neat one-two with Mohamed Zidan and calmly directing the ball beyond Kingston to break Ghanaian hearts.
Milovan Rajevac's men tried desperately to get the goal they needed but Asamoah and Eric Addo wasted good chances, so the
World Cup finalists, who had been hoping to earn their first
continental crown since 1982, will now have to wait for the 2012
tournament in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.
