Malawi Humiliate Algeria
Filed Mon 11 Jan

Malawi stunned Algeria in the African Cup of Nations by recording a shock 3-0 win in Group A.

Malawi were making their first appearance in the competition for 26 years, and they recorded a great victory as they comfortably beat the Desert Foxes.

Algeria suffered in the soaring temperatures of the afternoon with nine European-based players in their starting line-up. Algeria were visibly struggling in the stifling heat and they gifted their opponents the opener, goalkeeper Faouzi Chaouchi and Rangers defender Madjid Bougherra collided as they tried to clear a pass and the ball ran to Russel Mwafulirwa who scored into an empty net.

Malawi increased their lead in the 36th minute when Moses Chavula crossed from the left and Ivis Kafoteka headed home. Davi Banda scored early in the second half to complete Malawi's first ever win at the tournament and send them top of the group after Angola and Mali drew on Sunday.
